List of Xiaomi Mi and Redmi Phones to get Android Pie 9.0 Update

Android Pie is out in the real world, and multiple smartphones are already running the beta version of the Android Pie 9.0. With every new release of Android version, comes the question when will my smartphone maker release the update for its devices.

Xiaomi has grown rapidly in the last few years and is the number 1 smartphone company in India. Xiaomi’s entry into the Android One arena with it’s Mi A1 and the recently announced Mi A2 has brought all the limelight on to the Chinese giant. The company is achieving new milestones and bringing out exciting new devices in the market.

Xiaomi now is also official available in the European market where as far as what I have heard the rules for software updates and phone repair issues are quite strict. Google has already tasted a huge fine for the same. Moreover, for those who own Xiaomi’s Android One phones don’t have to worry about updates as these phones will be getting the latest one after they’re available for Google’s Pixel devices.

Apart from that, coming towards the Mi and Redmi series of devices, the Mi line mostly looks secure as most of the devices in the Mi series are the flagships such as the Mi 8, Mi 8 SE, the older Mi 6, Mi 6 Plus, and the Mi Mix series which will most probably get the Android P 9.0 update.

Mi Mix 2s Android P update

The Mi Mix 2S is eligible for the Android Pie 9.0 beta. Android Pie 9.0 on the rest of the Mi series devices should arrive by late Q1 2019. This time the updates will be rolled out much faster thanks to Project Trebel.

Mi 8 series phones will be the first ones to get the update. For the Mi Mix 2, it should arrive within a similar timeframe as the Mi 6, running on MIUI 10 or MIUI X. For now, most of these devices on Android Oreo 8.0 or Android Oreo 8.1 as most of the devices launched under the Mi brand are either Android One devices, flagship devices or upper mid-range devices such as the Mi Mix 2s, Which is already one of Google’s favorite and has an official early access to Android Pie beta program.

The Mi Mix 2s, Mi 8 and Mi 8 Explorer edition are already running on the Android Pie.

Xiaomi has confirmed that the rest devices will be getting the Android Pie update in Q4 2018. What’s surprising is the fact that the Mi 6, Mi 6 Plus and Mi Mix 2 are apparently missing from the list of devices getting the Android Pie update in Q4 2018 but this doesn’t mean that these devices will not be getting the Android Pie update, the Mi 6, Mi 6 Plus and Mi Max 2 will get the Android Pie update in Q1 2019.

List of Xiaomi Redmi Phones getting Android Pie 9.0 Update

  • Redmi Note 5 Pro (Already received one major update, but chances are still there)
  • Redmi 6
  • Redmi 6A
  • Redmi 6 Pro
  • Redmi Android One phone

These Redmi devices may not be on Xiaomi’s list for getting the Android Pie update in Q4 2018 but there are high chances that these devices will get the Android Pie update in Q1 2019 for sure.

In case of Redmi Note 5 Pro, it isn’t actually eligible for the Android Pie 9.0 beta update, however in recent news and a statement from Qualcomm, which says that it is working with Google to bring more Snapdragon-powered devices to run on Android P, and those devices which run on SD 660 and the SD 636 will be considered next. So, currently, Xiaomi has the Redmi Note 5 pro running on SD 636 which could be a possible candidate for this Android Pie beta program for the next batch of devices.

Moreover, for the Xiaomi Mi A1 and the Mi A2, these are Android One devices and will continue to get the latest updates after the Pixel devices start receiving it and this will keep for the next two years. Apart from the recently launched Redmi 6 series handsets, none of the devices from the Redmi series is going to get any Android Pie 9.0 love.

The devices mentioned above have already completed their one major update cycle while other may have not even plans for a future update. However, Xiaomi will always ensure that most of the devices launched in 2017 and the budget devices which have already received that one major update, to continue getting MIUI based updates.

Such as the Redmi Note 5 and the Redmi 5A prime have high chances of getting the MIUI 10 but it will be based on Oreo. As we have learned from a roadmap that Xiaomi released a couple of months which included older and entry-level devices such as the Mi 3 and the Redmi 3S plus were included to get the latest version of MIUI, but it wasn’t based on Android Oreo. And a similar thing might also befall with other remaining Xiaomi phones, as a software update for the next MIUI is inevitable.
