Xiaomi as promised earlier is now rolling out a new update for the Redmi Note 5, which now allows the device to use face-unlock as one of its security features, via this latest OTA update. The update comes as MIUI 9.2.4, and along with installing the face unlocking feature, it also brings overall system stability optimizations as well.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro already has this feature, but the standard variant was missing out on this one, which the Chinese OEM conveyed to be arriving later after its launch. And as promised the company delivered it within the given timeline of a few weeks. Moreover, the face-unlock feature gained popularity after the Apple’s iPhone X advance dot projector based face recognition hit the market.
However, that doesn’t mean everyone is copying Apple; the face recognition feature has been baked in Android OS since ages even before the lollipop days. But now it has gained immense popularity. And from OnePlus to Xiaomi everyone is getting on the bandwagon to offer the facial biometric security feature.
And as always the norm, before installing this update just make sure you have more than 50% battery remaining in your device and also it is recommended to download such OTA updates via WiFi to avoid any extra charges caused by using mobile data.
The update has already started rolling out and shall reach in every region in phases so be patient. Or to check for updates manually just head over to Settings > About Phone > and tap on System Software updates, to test the OTA’s availability manually.
