A hot phone is scary. The back feels like a stove, the screen dims, games stutter, and the battery drains in front of your eyes. The good news: overheating is almost always caused by a handful of fixable things, and only rarely by broken hardware. Here’s how to cool your phone down right now, figure out what caused it, and stop it from happening again.
The quick answer: if your phone is overheating, stop charging it, close your apps, turn off hotspot and GPS, take the case off, and move it out of the sun: never put it in the fridge, since condensation can cause real damage. Once it’s cool, find the cause: it’s usually a runaway app (check battery usage stats), navigation or hotspot running for long stretches, gaming while charging, a cheap charger, or a battery that’s simply worn out. Fix those and a healthy phone should only get warm, not hot.
First: cool it down the right way
Do these in order. They work faster together than any single one:
- Unplug it. Charging generates heat on its own; charging while hot compounds the problem.
- Close everything. Open Recent Apps and swipe them all away. One misbehaving app in the background is the most common culprit.
- Kill the radios. Turn off mobile hotspot, Bluetooth, GPS, and if the signal is weak, switch to airplane mode for a few minutes. A phone hunting for signal runs its modem hard.
- Take the case off. Cases trap heat, especially thick rugged ones.
- Get it out of the sun. Direct sunlight can push a phone from warm to shutdown-hot in minutes, especially on a car dashboard.
- Point a fan at it or just set it on a cool, hard surface. Metal and stone conduct heat away; a sofa or bed insulates it.
What NOT to do: never put a hot phone in the fridge or freezer. The sudden temperature swing creates condensation inside the phone, and moisture kills electronics far more reliably than heat does.
Now find what’s causing it
Check which app is burning the battery
Go to Settings → Battery → Battery usage. Whatever sits at the top of that list with an unusually high percentage is your prime suspect. Common offenders: navigation apps left running, video apps, social apps with autoplay video, and anything doing background sync gone wrong. If one app is way out of line, force-stop it, clear its cache, and update it, or uninstall and reinstall if it keeps misbehaving.
Gaming and camera sessions
Long gaming sessions and extended 4K video recording are the two heaviest legitimate workloads on a phone. Heat here is normal, but you can reduce it: lower the game’s graphics settings or frame rate cap, drop video recording from 4K/60 to 1080p/30 when you don’t need more, and take breaks. Three charging-related causes show up constantly:
- Using the phone heavily while fast-charging. Both generate heat; together they can be too much. Let it charge in peace when you can.
- Cheap uncertified chargers and cables. They deliver dirty power the phone has to work harder to manage. Use the original charger or a certified replacement from a known brand.
- Charging under a pillow or on a bed. No airflow. Charge on a hard surface.
Hotspot, navigation, and weak signal
Running a mobile hotspot for hours, using turn-by-turn navigation on a long drive (screen on + GPS + data simultaneously), or sitting in an area with one bar of signal all push the modem continuously. If your phone runs hot on every commute, mount it away from the windscreen sun and pre-download offline maps: offline navigation runs dramatically cooler.
If it overheats even when idle
A phone that gets hot while doing nothing points to a software or battery problem:
- Update everything. Install pending system updates and app updates: overheating bugs get patched more often than you’d think.
- Restart the phone. Clears stuck background processes. If you haven’t restarted in weeks, do it now.
- Check for a rogue recent install. Did the heat start after installing a particular app? Uninstall it and watch for a day. Apps from outside the Play Store are worth extra suspicion: some carry hidden crypto miners that cook phones.
- Run Play Protect. Open Play Store → profile icon → Play Protect → Scan. It catches known malicious apps.
- Check battery health. An old, degraded battery runs hotter. On many phones you can see battery health under Settings → Battery, or dial

Stop it happening again
- Keep auto-update on for apps and install system updates promptly.

- Don’t leave the phone in direct sun or a parked car.
- Restart weekly (or schedule an auto-restart if your phone supports it).
- Thick case + fast charging + summer = trouble. Slip the case off when charging on hot days.
- Keep at least 10-15% storage free. A completely full phone works harder at everything.
When it’s time for a repair shop
See a technician if the phone gets hot every day even after a restart and app cleanup, if it shuts down from heat regularly, if the battery is visibly swollen (back cover lifting: stop using it immediately), or if it started overheating right after a drop or water exposure. Those are hardware symptoms, and no settings tweak fixes hardware.
What’s actually happening inside a hot phone
Understanding the mechanics makes the fixes make sense, and helps you judge how worried to be.
Your battery has a comfort zone. Lithium-ion batteries are happiest between roughly 15°C and 35°C. Your processor protects itself by slowing down. When the chip gets too hot, the phone deliberately reduces its speed. The dimming screen, the paused fast charging, the camera app saying it needs to cool down: all deliberate self-defence, triggered in stages as temperature climbs. Your job is to remove the cause so it doesn’t have to.
Some heat sources are invisible. Two that surprise people: wireless charging runs inherently warmer than cable charging because energy transfer through a coil is less efficient. The loss becomes heat right against the phone’s back. And 5G, especially with a weak signal, works the modem harder than 4G did; if your phone runs warm all day in a patchy 5G area, switching preferred network to 4G/LTE in SIM settings is a legitimate cooling tweak that most people never think of.
Why flagships handle heat better. Modern flagship phones ship with vapor chamber cooling. A thin sealed plate of liquid that evaporates at the hot spot and condenses at the cool side, spreading heat across the phone’s body. Budget phones mostly rely on simple graphite sheets, which is why the same game warms a budget phone faster.
