Microsoft granted a patent for Automated Wireless Charging system

I am sure that most of you have phones capable of fast charging and wireless charging. Smartphones wireless charging works really slow even flagship phones from tech giants takes 3 to 4 hours to complete the charging.

A patent by Microsoft reveals company’s interest towards true wireless future. An Automatic Wireless Charging System which detects power levels and charges the device via a light beam. Wireless charging in all phones is what we want but is that it? I am not talking about some small changes. I’m talking about true wireless charging.

If you are not someone who can understand complicated stuff then Be Careful!

Long-Distance Automated Wireless Charging System

Many of you are new to this concept so let me explain it in simple words. It is the system with which you will be able to charge any of your chargeable devices from long distances without using any power cord and without any compromise of portability.

How Will It Work

The above chart is sufficient to understand how it works but if you need an elaboration then I will tell you exactly how it works.

This application describes example embodiments of automated charging. In one embodiment, a charging device may detect a presence of a power-consuming device. The charging device may then determine a status of a power level of the power-consuming device without physical contact with the power-consuming device.

The charging device may determine whether to charge the power-consuming device based on the status of the power level of the power-consuming device. If the power-consuming device is in need of charging, the charging device may charge the power-consuming device by, for example, directing a light beam to a power generation unit (e.g., a photovoltaic cell) of the power-consuming device.

In some embodiments, the charging device may be configured to charge power-consuming devices of a plurality of types, including, for example, mobile phones of different models, tablets of different models, laptops of different models, etc.

In one embodiment, a user 118 may have one or more power-consuming devices 104. The user 118 may place the one or more power-consuming devices 104 in one or more places or locations that are within a detectable range of the automated charging system 102.

Upon detecting multiple power-consuming devices 104, the automated charging system 102 may determine the respective power levels of the one or more power-consuming devices 104 wirelessly.

If the automated charging system 102 determines that one or more of the power-consuming devices 104 are in need of recharging (such as the power levels are less than a threshold power level, for example), the automated charging system 102 may start charging the power-consuming devices as shown by the transfer of power 120 from the automated charging system 102 to the power-consuming device 104.

In some embodiments, the automated charging system 102 may begin charging the power-consuming device 104 that has the lowest power level first before charging any of the other power-consuming devices. In other embodiments, based on the types of charging technology used and/or relative locations of the power-consuming devices 104, for example, the automated charging system 102 may charge multiple power-consuming devices 104 simultaneously. In some embodiments, the multiple power-consuming devices 104 may be owned and/ or used by multiple users.

Is It Even Possible

Sure It is. We live in such a world where anything can happen anytime. The processors used in phones are now many times better than what we had 2 years ago. The charging technology evolved many times. We now have fast charging and wireless charging technologies, so why not a long-distance wireless charging.

It’ll charge your devices anywhere you are without the need of using a wired charger. If we can have Self-Driving Cars then why not automatic charging system?

So When Can We Expect it?

Actually, there is no confirmation whether there will be a practical system or not. It is just a patent. We might see this technology in a year from now or We might never see this technology so take it with a grain of salt.
