How to Use Google Lens for Things You Didn’t Know It Could Do

Google Lens does far more than identify plants - text capture, live translation, document scanning and more.

Most people who’ve used Google Lens used it once, pointed it at a flower, got a plant name, and never opened it again. Fair enough. That’s how it’s marketed.

It’s also about a tenth of what the thing does. Lens quietly became one of the most useful tools on an Android phone, and almost nobody uses it past the party trick.

The quick answer: Google Lens lives inside the Google app, the Camera app on many phones, Google Photos, and the Chrome address bar. Beyond identifying plants and animals, it can pull text out of any photo or sign and paste it into your keyboard, copy handwriting into your phone, translate a menu live through the camera, solve maths problems step by step, scan documents to PDF, read a barcode or QR code, find where to buy a product you photographed, and copy text from your laptop screen straight to your phone. The two features worth learning first are text capture: point at anything written and copy it, and search with your camera on existing screenshots, which turns your Photos library into a searchable visual archive. Both work offline for basic text recognition on most modern phones.

Where Lens actually lives

Part of the reason people forget about Lens is that it doesn’t have one obvious home. It’s scattered across several apps, and which entry point you use changes slightly what it does.

  • Google app. A camera icon in the search bar. This is the full version.
  • Google Photos. A Lens icon when viewing any photo. Runs Lens on an image you already took.
  • Camera app: many phones put a Lens or “Google Lens” mode in the camera. Samsung’s One UI has Bixby Vision plus a Google Lens shortcut; Pixel has it directly in the camera. Xiaomi and OnePlus wire it into their own scanner modes.
  • Chrome: long-press any image on a webpage and choose to search it with Lens, or use the Lens icon in the address bar.
  • Circle to Search: on newer phones, long-press the home button or gesture bar and circle anything on screen. It’s Lens with a different front door.

If you can’t find it anywhere, the Google app is the reliable route. It’s pre-installed on every Android phone that ships with Google services.

The features nobody tells you about

Copying text out of the physical world

This is the one that changes how you use your phone. Point Lens at anything with writing on it. A book page, a business card, a Wi-Fi password taped to a router, a serial number on the back of an appliance, a whiteboard: tap the text, and it becomes selectable text you can copy.

No more typing a 24-character Wi-Fi key by hand while squinting at a router.

It handles handwriting too, with reasonable accuracy if the writing is halfway neat. Lecture notes, a recipe card in your grandmother’s handwriting, a shopping list: all convertible.

Copy from your laptop, paste on your phone

Less obvious: point your phone’s camera at your computer screen and use text capture. Lens will read the text off the monitor. If you’re signed into the same Google account on both, there’s a “Copy to computer” option that goes the other direction too.

It sounds ridiculous until you’re trying to get a long URL or a code snippet from one device to the other without emailing it to yourself.

Live translation through the camera

Switch Lens to Translate mode, point at foreign text, and the translation is overlaid in place. The sign or menu appears to have been rewritten in your language. It’s genuinely close to magic in a restaurant abroad.

Download the language pack in Google Translate first and it works offline, which matters because “abroad” and “no data” often go together. Accuracy is best with printed text and clean fonts; stylised menu typography and handwriting will confuse it.

Homework and maths

Point Lens at a maths problem and it’ll identify the equation and offer to solve it, often with steps and links to explanations. It handles algebra, calculus, geometry and word problems with varying success.

Whether this is a study aid or a cheating tool depends entirely on how it’s used, but as a way to check your working or understand a method you’ve forgotten, it’s excellent.

Document scanning

Lens can detect a document in frame, straighten it, crop it and clean up the contrast, then save or share it as a PDF. For receipts, forms and letters this replaces a dedicated scanner app entirely.

Google Drive also has a scan function that does the same thing, so you may already have two ways to do this on your phone.

Shopping and product identification

Photograph a lamp, a pair of trainers, a chair: Lens finds visually similar products and where to buy them. It’s better at distinctive-looking things than generic ones. A patterned rug will get a strong match; a plain white mug won’t.

The genuinely useful version of this is identifying something you already own but can’t name. The specific bolt, the light fitting, the plant that’s dying. Search terms fail; a photo doesn’t.

QR codes and barcodes

Lens reads both. Point at a barcode on a product and it’ll pull up prices and reviews. Most Android camera apps now detect QR codes natively without Lens, but if yours doesn’t, Lens is the fallback.

Searching your own screenshots

Open any old screenshot in Google Photos and hit the Lens icon. Now that screenshot is searchable. You can copy the text out of it, look up a product in it, or translate it. Your screenshots folder becomes an archive you can actually query rather than a graveyard.

Circle to Search: the newer front door

On phones that support it (recent Pixels, recent Samsung Galaxy flagships, and a growing list of others), you can long-press the home button or the gesture handle at the bottom of the screen and then circle, scribble on, or tap anything visible.

The advantage is that it works on top of whatever app you’re in. Watching a video and want to know what jacket someone’s wearing? Circle it. Reading a message with an unfamiliar term? Scribble over it. No screenshot, no app switching.

Availability varies by phone and region, and manufacturers enable it at different times. If the long-press does nothing, check your gesture navigation settings for a toggle, or accept that your phone doesn’t have it yet.

Where Lens falls down

Honesty helps here, because overselling it leads to frustration.

Handwriting is hit and miss. Neat print works. Cursive, especially rushed cursive, does not.

Bad lighting kills it. Text recognition needs contrast. A dimly lit menu or a glossy page catching a reflection will produce garbage.

Translation is literal. It gets you the gist of a menu. It does not get you nuance, idiom or tone. Don’t use it for anything where being slightly wrong matters.

Plant and animal ID is confident but not always right. Lens will name a mushroom. Do not eat a mushroom based on what Lens said. It is not an identification authority and it does not express uncertainty well.

Shopping matches can be nonsense. It finds visually similar items, which is not the same as finding the same item. Treat results as leads, not answers.

Most of it needs a connection. Basic on-device text recognition works offline on many phones, and downloaded translation packs work offline, but search, shopping, identification and solving all require data.

Making it faster to reach

The friction of opening the Google app, tapping the camera, waiting for it to load is enough that people don’t bother. Reduce it.

Add the Google Search widget to your home screen. It includes a Lens shortcut. On Pixel that widget is usually there by default at the bottom of the screen. On Samsung’s One UI you can add it from the widget picker; Samsung also ships its own search bar which is not the same thing, so pick the Google one.

Some phones let you assign Lens to a double-press of the power button or a shortcut on the lock screen. Check your gesture and shortcut settings. The option is buried in different places on One UI, HyperOS and ColorOS, usually under advanced features or gestures. Pixel keeps it simple with the camera app shortcut.

Privacy: what you should know

Lens sends images to Google’s servers for most of its functions. That’s how it identifies things. Basic on-device text recognition can happen locally on newer phones, but anything involving search or identification is a round trip.

Those queries can end up in your Google account activity if Web & App Activity is enabled. You can review and delete them at myactivity.google.com, and you can turn off the saving entirely there.

Practical implication: don’t point Lens at sensitive documents you’d rather not have processed by a third party. Passports, medical records, financial statements. Use a local scanner for those.

How do I open Google Lens on my phone?

The most reliable route is the Google app: tap the camera icon in the search bar. It’s also in Google Photos when viewing an image, in Chrome via long-press on any picture, and in the camera app on many phones. On recent Pixel and Samsung devices, long-pressing the home button or gesture bar launches Circle to Search, which is the same technology.

Does Google Lens work without internet?

Partly. Basic text recognition, copying text out of a photo, works offline on most modern phones because it runs on-device. Translation works offline if you’ve downloaded the language pack in Google Translate first. Everything else, including product search, plant identification and homework help, needs a connection.

Can Google Lens read handwriting?

Yes, with caveats. Neat printed handwriting converts well. Cursive, rushed writing and unusual letterforms produce errors, sometimes badly. It’s useful for lecture notes and lists, less reliable for anything you can’t proofread afterwards. Good lighting and a straight-on angle make a noticeable difference.

Is Google Lens safe to use on documents?

For everyday things, yes. But Lens uploads images to Google’s servers for most functions, and searches may be saved to your account activity. Avoid pointing it at passports, medical records or financial documents. You can review and delete Lens activity at myactivity.google.com, or turn off activity saving there entirely.

Worth ten minutes

Try three things today. Point Lens at a page of text and copy it. Open an old screenshot in Photos and run Lens on it. Switch to Translate mode and point it at any packaging in your kitchen with foreign text on it. Those three cover the core of what makes Lens useful, and once the muscle memory is there you’ll reach for it weekly, which is a lot more than most people manage after their one flower photo.
